Classical music & Flaine
A brief history ...
The vocation of the Flaine International Music Academy is to promote the teaching of music at an advanced level. But it is also there to create some magical moments for the public by holding a number of free concerts in the Flaine Auditorium.
Headed by Jean Lenert (violin teacher at the Higher National Music Conservatoire in Paris and the Regional National Conservatoire in Montpellier) and Bruno Latouche (former assistant director of the 'Bain de Musique'), and with tuition provided by teachers from prestigious music conservatoires in France and abroad, it is for pupils who have begun a professional career and those preparing for international competitions. A breeding ground for tomorrow's young soloists, it is also open to proficient adult amateurs interested in mixing with the musicians.
At the end of the course the competitive 'Grand Prix de l'Académie' is awarded; this includes a grant and the opportunity to feature as the soloist in one concert in the 2007-2008 season.
MUSIC IN FLAINE ACADEMY 'Musique in Flaine' came about thanks to the teachers and personalities involved with the 'Bain de Musique', who wanted to set up a top-level music academy devoted to chamber music. Free concerts are held in the Auditorium. This academy, whose president is Henriette de Vitry and which is supported by the Scaler Foundation and Jacques Boissonnas, takes place in the second half of August. The course is given by the Ysaÿe quatuor and the pianist Anne Queffelec.
FOR AN AUDIENCE OF MUSIC LOVERS Throughout August a dozen free concerts are held in the magnificent setting of the 'Eric et Sylvie Boissonnas' Auditorium. A number of lessons and the pupils' auditions are open to the public.
THE MUSIC FESTIVALS : A BRIEF HISTORY Extracts from The creation of Flaine by Eric Boissonnas "It is indeed true to say that in Flaine the working conditions are ideal. The music venues are close to each other, and where they are on different levels (Flaine Forum and Flaine Forêt) they are linked by inclined elevators. The course participants often stay in the same building as their teacher, making contact outside lesson times easy. The master classes are held in large function rooms or in the chapel so that large numbers of the public can attend. The 'Bain de Musique' guarantees that each course participant will have access to a piano for at least four hours a day. The 500-seater auditorium where the concerts are held is very comfortable, with outstanding acoustics. There is also the mountain atmosphere, walks and the view of the Aiguilles de Chamonix and Mont Blanc from Les Grandes Platières, which is accessible by cable car. The course participants say that in Flaine they have a really great time…."
On the Auditorium: "The official opening was a grand affair that took place on 2nd August 1986. Eugen Indjic gave a magnificent piano recital. Everybody was raving about the quality of the acoustics, the stylish architecture and the fountain by Paul Bury which livens up the foyer.”
These days, throughout August the 'Flaine International Music Academy' and 'Music in Flaine' continue the tradition of top-level musical tuition, with the same requirement for a high standard of working conditions for the teachers and students.
The Hôtel Aujon, which is closed during the summer, is one of Flaine's strategic musical venues. Most of the student practice rooms are located there, in the empty bedrooms, as are some lesson rooms for the teachers.
The large function room is the venue for the master classes, concert rehearsals and student auditions, and is open to the public. A violin maker and a bow maker also have a workshop there. It is also the central point for all information to do with the Academy. The teachers hold their lessons in a number of other places: the Auditorium, the chapel, the school, the ski school kids' club building and the Hôtel Aujon restaurant, etc.
