Environment

Flaine, a resort committed to the environment

Car-free resort, shuttle buses, lift links between Flaine Forum and Flaine Forêt...

A pioneer in sustainable development and ecology, Flaine continues to initiate innovative measures for the environment.

Flaine... An avant-garde resort

A pioneer in sustainable development, Flaine continues to initiate innovative and eco-responsible measures, 50 years after its creation. It was the first mountain resort equipped with city gas, the first to bury electric cables, to receive cable television, to equip itself with artificial snow...

Soft mobility

Every year, to limit the impact of private cars in the resort, Flaine offers a free shuttle service, within the resort (summer & winter) and between Flaine and Les Carroz (summer season only).

Flaine is a semi-pedestrian resort, so once you're here you don't need to use your car. Two public lifts operate 24 hours a day during the season, linking Flaine Forum to Flaine Forêt.

The resort has 4 charging points for electric cars (at the entrance to Flaine Forum, at the P3 car park above Flaine Forêt).

Setting up an Environmental Observatory

In 2007, the Flaine ski area decided to set up an environmental observatory, which has now been extended to the whole of the Grand Massif.

This tool aims to protect and respect our exceptional natural heritage. It now covers an area of 4,219 hectares spread over 5 municipalities. The observatory is a photograph of our environment: landscape, flora, fauna, agriculture, water, geology.

This snapshot of our environment makes it possible to monitor changes in a factual way, to find solutions to preserve or restore land and to preserve sensitive areas referenced by our observatory.

We are also demonstrating our determination to be exemplary in our dealings with the authorities and the regulations, by being forward-looking in our development projects.

The work carried out is based on three levels: observing, understanding, acting.

1- Net zero in carbon

One step closer to 0 carbon thanks to HV0 fuel

Grooming is Grand Massif Domaines Skiables' biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for almost 80% of its direct carbon footprint, due to the use of fossil fuels. Reducing energy consumption and moving away from fossil fuels in this area is therefore a priority.

Following tests carried out last season by Compagnie des Alpes, Grand Massif Domaines Skiables has decided to switch its entire fleet of snow groomers to HVO100 synthetic fuel from the 2022-2023 season.

Reforestation of local forests

Le Grand Massif is committed to reducing its CO2 emissions and is providing 3 years' funding for the reforestation of private forest plots affected by the storm in 2019, which impacted more than 180 hectares of forest.

Some of these operations will be awarded the "Low-Carbon" label, a government standard used to certify the contribution made by companies and local authorities to CO2 sequestration projects in forests. The aim is to encourage silvicultural itineraries that go beyond conventional ones, enabling additional carbon to be captured. These actions form part of the action plan to offset residual carbon emissions.

2- Positive biodiversity

Flaine: A management plan for our natural areas

Grand Massif Domaines Skiables is taking this approach a step further by implementing a Management Plan for all the natural environments on its properties (and not just the forests), with the aim of preserving and enhancing biodiversity as well as welcoming the public.

The document will be produced in 2023 in partnership with the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels de Haute-Savoie and the S.A.R.L. "Gestionnaires Forestiers des Alpes", for implementation in 2024.

The data from the Environmental Observatory will be used to produce the Management Plan.

Revegetation of work areas

Grand Massif Domaines Skiables is also committed to improving its seed mixes, with mixes selected for the agricultural context but also to be as close as possible to naturally occurring seeds.

To this end, a specific mixture of species adapted to the natural context was sown on 5 ha of the Têtes des Saix.

Restoration of wetlands

All Grand Massif Domaines Skiables projects are part of an E-R-C (avoid-reduce-compensate) approach. When planning a project, we first think about avoiding and reducing impacts, and then compensating for them.

This involves restoring the water supply to these environments by replacing the draining ditches with so-called reversible drains: these drains are clogged in spring and summer, thus allowing water to overflow and feed the wetland. ! In winter, the drains are cleared, restoring the drainage and not impacting the management of the snow: this is a fine example of reconciliation between the protection of the resource and the exploitation of the ski area.

Protection of the Black Grouse and Willow Ptarmigan wintering areas

Aware that winter activities can threaten these species, Le Grand Massif is committed to protecting the areas essential to their life cycle. The sharing of free spaces between ski area users and the wildlife that lives there is a priority.

For several years now, quiet areas have been marked out at the start of winter and identified by bird flags and signs in the Combe de Vernant. In winter 2022-2023, new quiet areas will be marked out in the Flaine ski area. All these areas will be indicated on the piste map.

3- Zero waste

"0 rubbish in the ski area" objective

Le Grand Massif makes pocket ashtrays available at awareness-raising events and at ski lift ticket offices. 1 cigarette butt in the ashtray means 500 litres of water saved.

During the winter 2022-2023, there were no more rubbish bins in the ski area. Keep and sort your rubbish at the bottom of the resort, where bins are available.

Recycling ski lift tyres

Thanks to a partnership with the CDA and the IDM team, GMDS was able to recycle 2,400 kg of used tyres in 2022. The 2,400 kg recycled saved 16.8 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Tyres are the plastic parts of the lift rollers on the pylons.

The collection process set up by IDM as part of the Ecovertis project enables waste to be collected, flows to be pooled and the material to be recycled and given a new life as floor tiles.

The Flaine company canteen composts its bio-waste

Food waste from the snack bar is recycled in a brand new composter.

This device from the company La bulle D'Oxygène has the advantage of being mobile and hermetically sealed (rodent-proof and odourless). It works by adding only dry matter and can compost up to 10 tonnes of biowaste each year.

Its implementation will reduce the fraction of mixed waste and indirectly reduce the number of trucks needed to collect and treat this waste. In the long run, this means less CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere!
